Music
Curriculum Intent
At The Hazeley Academy, we believe that music is a vital part of a well-rounded education. Our small but mighty Music Department is committed to delivering a high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring curriculum that nurtures creativity, builds confidence, and fosters a lifelong love of music.
Our Vision
We aim to provide a rich and balanced music education that is accessible to all students, regardless of background or ability. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, vibrant extra-curricular programme, and diverse musical experiences, we empower students to explore music as performers, composers, and critical listeners.
Curriculum Music
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
- Years 7–8: Students receive one hour of music per fortnight, following a curriculum informed by the Model Music Curriculum (2021). They develop foundational skills in:
- Performing: Solo and ensemble work using voice and instruments.
- Composing: Creating original music using traditional and digital tools.
- Listening & Appraising: Exploring a wide range of musical styles and traditions.
- Year 9: Students who opt for GCSE Music begin their studies with four lessons per fortnight, allowing them to deepen their understanding and develop their skills in preparation for Key Stage 4.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)
Students follow the Eduqas GCSE Music course, receiving 4–5 hours of instruction per fortnight. The course includes:
- Performance: Solo and ensemble work, assessed through recordings.
- Composition: Two original pieces – one free and one to a set brief.
- Appraisal: Study of four key areas:
- Musical Forms and Devices
- Music for Ensemble
- Film Music
- Popular Music
We ensure all students are supported through adaptive teaching, subsidised instrumental lessons for Pupil Premium students, and close collaboration with SEND specialists.
Extra-Curricular Music
We offer a wide range of musical opportunities beyond the classroom, including:
- Instrumental and vocal tuition from 12 visiting peripatetic tutors
- A variety of ensembles and choirs for all abilities
- A biennial full-scale musical production open to all year groups
Currently, 118 students are enrolled in instrumental or vocal tuition, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for music across the school. If your child is interested in signing up to instrumental lessons, and you would like to find out more, please follow this link or email music@haz5d.com.
